Top 100 Golf Courses highlights Elie as One of Fife’s Finest

Recent results from the Top 100 Golf Courses survey once again underline the exceptional quality of golf offered in Scotland, with The Golf House Club Elie earning the distinction of being ranked as the third best golf course in Fife. In a region celebrated worldwide for its historic links, this confirms Elie’s standing among the very best and places it in elite company, surpassed only by The Old Course at St Andrews and Kingsbarns.

Do course rankings matter? Absolutely.  Yes, they are subjective but demonstrate to visitors and members how special a day out at The Golf House Club Elie really is. What truly distinguishes Elie is how naturally the course sits within its coastal landscape. Shaped largely by nature rather than heavy-handed design, the links makes full use of natural undulations, dunes, and firm turf. Golfers are asked to think creatively, negotiate changing winds, and rely on traditional shot-making skills rather than power alone.

The historic influence of Old Tom Morris, who walked the land in the late 19th century, adds further significance to the course. His light touch respected the terrain, ensuring Elie retained its distinctive character. Today, the course remains a compelling example of classic links golf and a reminder of why it continues to be recognised among Scotland’s finest playing grounds.

There is a wonderful article entitled ‘Before Architecture had a Vocabulary: Elie as a Case Study’ written by Sam Weitzman-Kurker which explores Elie’s front to back greens, blind shots and the natural undulating turf.  Well worth a read.
