If you haven’t come across padel tennis yet, you’re in for a treat! Once a niche sport, it’s now making waves as the fastest-growing sport worldwide. Particularly adored in Spain, it ranks as the country’s second most popular participation sport, just behind football. The UK has caught onto the trend with enthusiasm, evidenced by the rapid increase in court construction nationwide. It’s safe to say padel tennis is not just a passing trend—it’s here to stay.
The best news? Padel tennis is arriving in Elie this summer! What is padel tennis?
Originating in Mexico, padel is relatively new sport with the first clubs in the UK not opening until 2011. The game is often described as a combination of tennis, squash with a hint of table tennis. While the court resembles that of a tennis court, it is smaller in size (10m x 20m), is surrounded by glass walls and has a floor made of concrete, plastic or artificial grass. The game is played with a “padel” which is closer in looks to a table tennis bat than it is to a tennis or squash racket. Padels are typically made from graphite and are stringless, and the balls used are like tennis balls but with a little less pressure.
The game is usually played in doubles and while it shares some similarities with the rules of squash and tennis (the scoring system is the same as tennis for example), the rules, strokes and techniques are very different. For example, balls can be played off the walls (like squash) and when serving, the ball cannot go above waist level.
